By-products of TiO2

The TiO2 production process produces chemical gypsum – white and red. White gypsum is used as a raw material for plasterboard, cement and fertiliser in agriculture. Red gypsum is an alternative to natural soils.

About white/red gypsum

CEGIPS is our brand name for calcium sulphate dehydrate gypsum (CaSO4 x2H2O- Gypsum) – a white chemical gypsum produced as a by-product of TiO2 production. It is a growing alternative to natural gypsum alongside other chemical gypsums (citric, phosphoric, REA or FGD gypsum). They have been successfully replacing natural gypsum for many years with appropriate environmental regulation.

  • In the cement industry, as an additive to Portland clinker for cement production.
  • In the construction industry, in the production of alpha and beta gypsums (plasters, mortars, levelling compounds, plasterboards and bricks), and in the production of anhydride (floor screeds).
  • In agriculture, for fertilisers to improve the structure or chemical-physical properties of soils.

RECEGIPS is our brand of chemical red gypsum, a by-product of TiO2 production. It is the neutral product of neutralising the residual sulphuric acid from TiO2 production with limestone flour and lime milk. It is reddish brown in colour, coarse-grained, partially bondable, and moist in character. In addition to white gypsum (CaSO4 x2H2O), it also contains iron oxides, titanium dioxide, and traces of silica and magnesium hydroxides.

Red gypsum is an alternative to natural soils. Cinkarna uses most of the red gypsum produced for its own needs – to fill the Za Travnik Waste Disposal Facility.

Sustainability

We reintegrate by-products into downstream production processes

The two by-products, which are produced as waste material, so to speak, in the production of titanium dioxide, are incorporated for reuse in further production processes in other industries, notably the use of white gypsum in construction and agriculture; red gypsum is used as a filler in the construction of embankments and as backfill.

The titanium dioxide production process produces the following By-products
